Most
people we have told about our plans for a world trip have responded with words
such as: “It sounds wonderful, I’m so jealous, I wish I could do a trip like that,
but with my family / my job / my house etc there is no way I could do it…”
“If I ever win the lottery I’d love to do a world trip”
“It’s my dream to travel the world… maybe when I retire.” A world trip is a wild dream that will remain just a dream unless we do
something about it. Paul had always said that when the time came for him to
leave Bermuda he would “take the long way home”, but after 6 years out here
the concept of leaving was looking less and less likely as each day passed.
Tonya, as usual, was itching to travel again, so, after long discussions which
seemed to get us no closer to a decision Tonya set the ball in motion
by resigning! So, what started out as a wild dream is finally becoming a reality. Although our
trip is still a long way off (we will set off from the UK on April 1, 2001) we
have now both resigned from our jobs, given notice on our apartment and sold
almost all of our possessions. The initial decision to resign from decent jobs
that we had worked hard to get wasn’t an easy one, but with every day that
passes and every new place that we research we become more and more convinced
that we have made the right decision. At the end of January Tonya will leave Bermuda for the UK where she will spend
some time catching up with friends and relatives and will be in charge of the
final planning; obtaining visas and collecting tickets etc. Paul will stay in
Bermuda to work until to March 31, 2001. Our current itinerary is as follows (although it has changed several times
already, and is bound to change again):
